  • Unnecessary violence

The movie is gorgeous with several unnecessarily violent scenes that seem to plague Del Toro’s vision.
  • Yuck.

Two lovers. Different species. They overcome a headstrong baddie. One undergoes a transformation to become like the other. They live happily ever after. (The plot to Beauty and the Beast. And a hundred others. Oh, and this movie.) Beautiful cinematography, but Best Picture?? Not a chance.

  • Incredible

In every aspect. Screenplay, cinematography, score, acting, costume design, and production design were all phenomenal. Disappointed to see all the negativity here.
  • What drug was the writer on?

Awful awful awful plot. No clue what the point of this train-wreck was. Geeky girl falls in love with the Swamp Thing while being chased by a psychopath who wants to kill them both. Seriously? Some of the character development went nowhere too. Like the pie-serving diner guy who plays a large role as a potential love interest, then shows his true colors, then poof--gone. Wish I could get those 2 hours back in my life.

In a few years this will be on that list of "How Did That Ever Win the Oscar?" movies. It's shallow, phony, and horribly cornball, and its pretense to political or social commentary is so rudimentary only a film critic could take it for profundity. If you really think the relationship between the mute woman and the Creature from the Black Lagoon knock-off was in any way romantic or sexy, you've got radically different ideas about romance and sexiness from mine. Some good actors fail to make anything of the adolescent script. Plus it's tedious and way longer than it should be. I pretty much hated it, but I'm giving it an extra star for the sets.
